Books to make you sound smart to clients

Just Enough Research by Erika Hall and Design is a Job by Mike Monteiro. (Fun fact: they’re actually married to each other. But their books are masterful resources on how to craft compelling, ethical user experiences. And then sell them.)

UX Strategy by Jaime Levy. (Some people love this, some don’t.)

Lean UX: Applying Lean Principles to Improve User Experience by Jeff Gothelf.

Don’t Make Me Think, Revisited: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability by Steve Krug. (The masterwork in the field. But tbh, you might just “get it” from the title.)

UX tools that make you look way professional

Sketch (cool kids use this sometimes, but I now recommend Figma or Adobe XD as they’re what my clients use more than Sketch as of January 2022)

InVision

Oh look, someone made a website called “UX Tools” that kind of does this better, go check it out.

Other Places to Learn

DesignAcademy.io (I absolutely adore Laura Elizabeth’s work, and her course is awesome and opening again soon.)

Draft.nu (Nick Disabato is a consulting and conversion rate optimization via design genius.)

Make Money Online (Nick’s podcast with Kai Davis about selling conversion rate optimization design consulting.)

Let’s Make Mistakes (A podcast about design starring Mike Monteiro and Jessie Char, two smart and angry designers who talk about the world through the lens of design.)

Flux (YouTube channel where Ran Segall teaches a lot about running a design business, how to do good design, etc.)

Content Strategists (FB group where lots of content strategy/UX smarties hang out sometimes, although less than before because FB = 👎)

Content + UX Slack and Other Communities (a HUGE Slack workspace where lots and lots of working UX/Content professionals congregate.)
